In the Heights is moving uptown, but not as far as its Washington Heights setting: Producers Kevin McCollum, Jeffrey Seller and Jill Furman plan to transfer the musical to Broadway during the 2007-2008 season at a theater to be announced. In the Heights, which opened at 37 Arts on February 8, will close its off-Broadway production on July 15 after 33 previews and 181 regular performances
With music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda and a book by Quiara Alegria Hudes, In the Heights is directed by Thomas Kail and choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler, who won both Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for his work. The show itself was named Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical by the Outer Critics Circle. Miranda, winner of a 2007 Theatre World Award and Clarence Derwent Award, also stars in the role of Usnavi. Full casting for the Broadway production will be confirmed at a later date.
In the Heights is a quintessential New York musical about a vibrant and tight-knit community at the top of the island of Manhattan. The music pulses with the hopes and dreams of three generations as they struggle to forge an identity in a neighborhood on the brink of transition.
